Five Suits Every Man Should Own

Words by Tony Wilkes

It’s hard to believe 2020 is five years ago. Much has changed since the year of lockdown, not least of all our attitude towards suits. ‘Is the suit finally dead?’ mused The Financial Times at the time. On the contrary. As classic menswear tropes return to prominence for Spring/Summer 2025, brands are revealing a new kind of tailoring: hard-working, comfortable and of the highest quality. But one suit doesn’t fit all occasions. How many does a man need? In a nutshell, five styles should have you covered – and here are some of the best for 2025.

Business Formal

In other words, a power suit. A double-breasted blazer worn with a tie will always look sharp and demonstrate workplace authority. Formerly the uniform of ’80s Wall Street, today’s iterations are cut slimmer and softer, while their wide peak lapels broaden the chest and draw eyes up to make you look taller. Pinstripes, worn by financiers for over two centuries, still carry clout, though plain grey or navy options will hold their own equally well. Complete the look with streamlined cufflinks, Oxford or Monk shoes and a heavy-hitting business watch.

Business Casual

Let’s clear up any ambiguity. Business casual, like smart-casual, simply means wearing a formal suit with items that are more laid-back. Start with your classic single-breasted suit and, instead of a tie and starched shirt, opt for a rollneck, T-shirt or knitted polo. The key here is to choose staples that are easy and sleek (logos are a no) and in neutral, harmonising tones. Navy, white, brown and grey are the safest bets and all work together. On your feet, you can’t go wrong with a loafer, Chelsea boot or smart leather sneaker.

Black Tie

Certain events still call for a tux – and, when you consider their suave appeal, it’s easy to see why. The smart go-to of dapper gents right back to the 1860s, the blueprint remains a steadfast assurance of old-world glamour. How to look current? The answer lies in accessories. Aside from your white dress shirt and black patent shoes, there is room to play. An embellished bow tie from Giorgio Armani, perhaps, a piece of minimalist jewellery, or a pocket square to show personality. With these finishing touches, you won’t look lost in the crowd.

The Linen Lounge Suit

Whether he’s travelling for work, a winter sun getaway or a destination wedding, a man needs a suit that can handle some heat. Enter: linen. This natural fibre is lightweight and breathable, feels cool against the skin and, in tones like white or beige, will deflect the sun’s rays. Choosing trousers in a different colour keeps things casual, as does eschewing a tie or choosing an open-neck polo. Leather boat shoes are a trending choice for footwear – swap them out for sandals when on holiday.

Made to Measure

The success of a suit comes down, in the main, to one thing. Fit. As well as aesthetic, getting this right also means comfort – and you won’t look good if you’re uncomfortable. You’ll find a range of made-to-measure services at Harrods with the world’s leading tailoring brands, from TOM FORD to Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli and Giorgio Armani.
