A Harrods History

From grocery-store beginnings to the undisputed home of luxury: we’ve been on quite the journey since 1849. Here’s a whistle-stop tour of our extraordinary history.

1849

Our flagship Knightsbridge location was opened by Charles Henry Harrod as a general store and purveyor of tea, quickly gaining a reputation for top-quality produce and exceptional service.

1900s

We began housing the latest fashion collections from across the world, and made our first foray into fine-dining with The Grand Restaurant, opened in 1909.

1920s–1950s

Continuing to keep up with the trends, we introduced electric vans in the 1930s – making it easy to deliver the best of the best to our loyal customers across the country.

1960s–1990s

Making moves towards the modern, the Fourth Floor welcomed the Way In boutique for the fashion-forward shopper, while the Ground Floor Banking Hall made way for the Beauty Halls we see today.

2000s–2010s

Ringing in a new decade as the home of luxury, we continued to offer an unparalleled selection of brands, with each floor and department having its own distinct identity. At Harrods, anything is possible.

2024

175 years and counting. Keeping innovation, collaboration and unforgettable experiences at the heart of what we do, we can’t wait to see what the next 175 will bring.
