The Best Men’s Shirtmakers at Harrods

Words by Tony Wilkes

“It’s so difficult to find a really good shirt,” says 100Hands co-founder Varvara Maslova, “because they’re considered to be so simple.” For 100Hands, it takes 50 different craftspeople to make a single shirt, and 45 minutes to perfect just one buttonhole. “These days, it’s so hard to find any speciality,” Maslova tells us. “But that’s the reason why people come to Harrods. You discover something really extraordinary.”

Whether you’re planning for a wedding, special occasion or upgrading your work wardrobe, look no further for five of the best shirtmakers in Menswear now.

100Hands

“It’s the perfect shirt,” says Varvara Maslova. “Our quality lies in the precision.” The Amsterdam label outsources nothing – everything is made at its state-of-the-art facilities in India, audited by Fair Wear each year, which allows 100Hands to specialise in crafting only the best. Such quality was quick to catch the eye of Savile Row, and 100Hands supplies shirts for numerous leading tailors. “It’s all about the people,” Maslova tells us. “Not one person makes the whole shirt. Somebody makes the plackets. Somebody else makes the cuffs. It goes on and on. Our efficiency rate is well below the industry level because we put so much into emphasising the quality. We want to create something truly outstanding.”

Eton

Founded in Sweden in 1928, Eton has nearly a century of shirtmaking expertise. So what exactly sets one its shirts apart? First, there’s the collar. Each is made up of seven layers with a double-fused interlining, ensuring perfect balance and a sharp, structured edge. The cuffs are also double-fused and double-pressed, a process designed for superb durability and a neat appearance. Then there’s the fabric. Eton’s signature twill is woven from two-ply yarn spun from extra-long staple cotton, resulting in a shirt that is ultra-soft and crease-resistant. Don’t miss the brand’s broader menswear offering, including refined ties, pocket squares and tailoring.

Brioni

Speaking to Brioni’s legacy, for creative director Norbert Stumpfl it’s all about interpretation. “Our task is to interpret with contemporary sensibility,” he explains, “rethinking the wardrobe with fluidity in mind, from day to night, business to leisure.” Founded in Rome in 1945, Brioni is the pinnacle of Italian tailoring, specialising in a natural sophistication with an innate sense of proportion, colour and ease. Every Brioni tailor is rigorously apprenticed for five years at the brand’s own school in the heart of Abruzzo – a region with tailoring in its DNA – where only 16 tailors are admitted every four years.

Polo Ralph Lauren

‘Designing is not about an idea for a shirt or a collar... It’s about knowing how to do it, day in and day out, and about having a point of view and a vision.’ So reads one of many mantras from designer Ralph Lauren – and it’s this vision that still holds sway today. After nearly 60 years, the brand’s appeal remains in the American preppy style it made so famous, which resurfaced as a key menswear trend of 2025. A man wearing a Polo Ralph Lauren shirt will always recall the classic collegiate dressing of 1960s America: timeless, sporty and effortlessly smart.

TOM FORD

“I hope I seduced you,” is how Haider Ackermann summed up his TOM FORD debut to reporters. Unveiled in the low-lit, mirrored Pavillon Vendôme, the collection emphasised the brand’s roots in sultry pieces designed to be lived in at night. It’s this attitude that infuses TOM FORD shirting – all made in Italy from tactile fabrics like charmeuse and silk. For a casual, daytime look, the brand’s cotton button-downs – whether plain or striped – are just as easily paired with jeans as its world-famous suiting.
