If a sweet treat was a fragrance, it would be a gourmand perfume. Evoking the sensations of delicious food and desserts, these scents capture enticing aromas like that of a Parisian bakery, spun sugar at the fairground and even the smell of ground coffee at your local café... Making them utterly irresistible. However, gone are the days of the sweet, verging-on sickly perfumes of old; the latest concoctions are sophisticated with just the right amount of sweetness. And while they’re still reminiscent of some of your favourite treats, they’re a little more refined than their previous counterparts.
A late addition to the olfactory family tree, a gourmand fragrance is one of a particularly moreish nature. Featuring edible, dessert-like notes such as vanilla, caramel, chocolate, praline, coffee and marshmallow, gourmand scents evoke both warmth and nostalgia.
The niche category was made famous by Mugler’s Angel, a ‘90s icon that still epitomises the sweet genre to this day, thanks to its distinct melody of tonka bean, chocolate and sweet honey notes.
“Gourmand fragrances are essentially an overdose of sugary notes,” agrees Jerome Epinette, perfumer for Floral Street. “They’ve become more and more present in modern scents where these edible notes offer an alternative to classic sweetness,” he adds. Gourmands can be made up of a variety of notes. “Essentially anything that delights the senses with sweet, sugary, creamy accents in addition to maltol/ethyl maltol (cotton candy), which can include caramel, chocolate, milk, praline, coffee, toffee, almonds, bubblegum and of course vanilla,” shares Epinette.
