100 Years of The House of Suntory: Hibiki Editions

Words by Sophia Miller

1923, Shimamoto, Japan. Whisky pioneer Shinjiro Torii founded The House of Suntory and opened Yamazaki, the country’s first malt whisky distillery – thus sparking a legacy that would blossom into one of Japan’s biggest success stories.

More distilleries followed – including the renowned Hakushu and Chita – as The House of Suntory continued its mission to produce one-of-a-kind whiskies inspired by Japanese nature and craftsmanship. 100 years later, this mission is upheld by Shinjiro’s grandson, Shingo Torii, alongside fifth-generation chief blender Shinji Fukuyo.

So, 2023 has been a year of celebration for The House of Suntory – and what better way to commemorate a century of pioneering Japanese spirit than with a series of exclusive collectors’ editions? Released throughout the year, these bottles showcase the Suntory distilleries’ best and most meticulous blends.

“The limited editions represent our relentless pursuit of quality and symbolise our promise to carry our philosophy on for the next hundred years and beyond.”

Now, the final two editions from the anniversary line-up are with us: and it’s all about Hibiki. Meet the new Hibiki 21-Year-Old, and a limited-edition bottle design of Hibiki Japanese Harmony that honours the four seasons as a nod to the past, present and future.

To mark the centenary and celebrate these special releases, the House of Suntory has partnered with Academy Award-winning director Sofia Coppola and actor Keanu Reeves – both longtime fans of Suntory whisky – to create a short film depicting the meaning of “Suntory Time” through a new and exciting lens.

100 Year Anniversary Limited Editions

Hibiki 21-Year-Old

For this special 100th anniversary edition of the Hibiki 21-Year-Old chief blender Shinji Fukuyo was determined to use Mizunara oak for the first time, rather than the typical sherry cask. The final blend explores how a single detail can alter the whole alchemy of a whisky. Refined and elegant, it boasts notes of blackberry, ripe banana and caramel on the nose and a complex palate of dried apricot, honeycomb and spiced Japanese sandalwood with a rich Mizunara-imbued finish.

Hibiki Japanese Harmony

Blended from the finest Japanese malt and grain whiskies, Hibiki Japanese Harmony symbolises an important chapter of The House of Suntory’s story – and now, the saga continues with a limited-edition bottle design to commemorate the centenary. It brings Japanese craftsmanship to life with a traditional Sestugekka design, featuring motifs of the snow, moon and flowers to represent Japan’s changing seasons.

As for the flavour profile? Complex yet delicate, it offers notes of rose, lychee and woody rosemary on the nose – complemented by deliciously sweet acacia honey, candied orange peel and white chocolate on the palate.
