Linen

A natural fibre derived from flax, linen is loved for its breathability and functional properties. Though relatively low maintenance in its care, it still requires attention to keep it at its best. Diligence goes a long way.

How to Wash Linen

Quality is your first consideration. “Poor quality linens will not wash as well as the premium options do,” explains Danny Ching, head of design at Frescobol Carioca. “Checking the care instructions before washing is important to ensure a smooth process.” Machine washing is generally no issue. In fact, according to Clothes Doctor founder Lucinda O’Connor: “Linen actually gets better after each wash, becoming softer and more absorbent.” So far, so good. To be safe, however, Danny recommends keeping the temperature low and choosing a gentle cycle. Does colour matter? Yes. “It goes without saying that dark linens should be separated from whites – as with any other clothing – to avoid unwanted colour transfer,” he says. For extra peace of mind, the Frescobol Carioca expert advises using a mild detergent “to protect the fabric’s quality and colour”.

How to Care for Linen

“Some linen items are suitable for tumble drying,” says Frescobol Carioca’s Danny Ching. “However, I always advocate for linen to dry naturally, either hung on a rack or laid flat to maintain its shape.” As linen is prone to wrinkling, steaming is key – Lucinda O’Connor recommends doing so inside-out. As for storage, the looser the better. According to Danny: “Folding linen loosely is best practice, as pockets of air will allow the fabric to breathe and stay dry – crucial to preserving natural materials.” Finally, he says, “to prevent crushing your linen, ensure there are no heavy items weighing down on it”.
