How to Master Airport Style like a ’90s Celebrity

Words by Sophia Miller

With so many boxes to tick, choosing an airport outfit can be a fashion nightmare. Do you embrace comfort in head-to-foot cashmere, or channel Jackie Kennedy Onassis in chic tailoring and an oversized hat? We’ve all got our travel essentials – but, as summer holiday season beckons, it can’t hurt to take inspiration from those who did it best: the A-list style icons of the ’90s. The paparazzi may not be waiting at Heathrow – but you can still treat Terminal 5 like it’s your runway.

Embrace Athleisure

If the idea of wearing jeans on a long-haul fills you with dread, you’ll be pleased to know that elevated activewear is an equally fitting in-flight option. Right now, the who’s who of fashion are buying their sweatshirts, leggings and joggers from Sporty & Rich, Skims and Adanola – styling them with the latest Miu Miu Gymnasium and Loewe Runner sneakers. Top your look with a denim jacket and shades à la Tyra Banks for a finish that’s off-duty model over creature of comfort.

Choose Lightweight Layers

Skipping athleisure is not the same as eschewing ease and comfort. Follow Cindy Crawford’s lead. Jeans, a long-sleeved top and cashmere jumper (you choose the neutral palette) are a combination relaxed enough for travelling, but effortlessly polished to wear out once you reach your destination. Layering is key – a trench coat or oversized shirt are equally wise choices to shield against chills at 30,000 feet while smartening up your basics.

Go Monochrome

An early check-in calls for an outfit formula that looks good no matter how tired you are. Enter: all black. Channel ’90s Kate Moss and pair a roll-neck knit with loose-fitting trousers and matching accessories – comfortable yet chic. Come summer, simply swap your jumper for a T-shirt and the boots for a pair of slip-on sandals or flats. Our only non-negotiable? Dark sunglasses.

Lean into Accessories

Forget accessories as your finishing touches – in the airport, they’re the starting point. Statement caps, sunglasses and holdalls (Louis Vuitton for the club lounge) do wonders to draw the eye away from the odd crease and travel-weary complexion – all while bringing personality to simpler ensembles.
