A Man’s Guide to Wearing Summer Prints

Words by Tony Wilkes

There can be little argument that a summer wardrobe requires some level of print – yet, perhaps due to lack of practice, many of us view the maximalist season’s arrival with some degree of apprehension. That’s why we’ve outlined five easy ways to wear print this summer, from bold shirts to swim shorts and matching co-ords, ensuring you’ll look like you’re wearing your clothes – not your clothes wearing you.

Start at the Top

The easiest way to introduce print? Follow a formula. If you split your outfit in two, choose a motif for either north or south, letting the other remain neutral for balance. A bright shirt is the obvious choice – look to options from Casablanca, Ami Paris, Valentino and TOM FORD, which offer an array of themes including nautical, paisley and floral.

The Short Cut

Summer is for shorts as much as prints. Standouts this season can be found in the Loewe Paula’s Ibiza capsule, inspired by the Balearic boutique. Elsewhere, Homme Plissé Issey Miyake offers abstract styles, crafted with its signature pleats – designed to be as comfortable as loungewear, they don’t require ironing – while Thom Browne proves you can take the look to smarter territory.

Down to a Tee

A printed T-shirt is a fail-safe way to lend some interest to an outfit without going overboard. Don’t miss our exclusive options from Rhude, referencing Lake Como and ideal for a holiday. New to Harrods, Willy Chavarria’s vintage-inspired options are another favourite, plus Loewe’s latest arrivals emblazoned with hot-house blooms.

Make a Splash

If you’re in the market for swimwear, be sure to check out our latest guide to the best swim shorts – this includes plain styles, briefs and even pairs you can wear with tailoring. For something more out there, you can’t go wrong with Frescobol Carioca, Fedeli and Vilebrequin. Renowned for its craftsmanship, the latter’s pairs require up to 49 steps to make.

Game, Set, Match

There’s something especially satisfying about a printed set. Like the matching components of a suit, these outfits look impactful and always put together. Love Brand & Co.’s are made with care for the ocean, while Valentino opts for all-out maximalism. Last but not least: Eleventy. A new collection has been designed just for Harrods, and stars wearable prints across easy linen.
